Everyone had always assumed that they would get together, and David could always admit he’d considered a time or two that they’d end up together as well, but first and foremost they had been friends. They’d built their fort together, waded through the trials and tribulations of adolescence together, and enjoyed their status as the crème de la crème of Peachfields High together.

They’d been exceptionally close, sharing any and all secrets, dreams, triumphs and sorrows. They’d never actually dated, but had lost their virginity to one another when they were fifteen. It was a step they’d discussed at length, and finally decided that they both wanted to make sure they lost their virginity to someone they’d never regret. After that they’d engaged in the occasional romp, but they never let it interfere with their friendship.During high school they’d both had a series of significant others, but ultimately always broken up when whoever they were dating would demand they stop being so close in their friendship.

David and Rebecca had always stood strong as a united front when anyone threatened their bond. They were a package deal and if anyone couldn’t accept that, both David and Rebecca had been more than willing to give them their walking papers. It was in college that things started to change.David, being the only son in the family, had been expected to take over for his father when the time came, but that wasn’t what he wanted. David longed for a chance to spread his wings. He’d wanted to travel, see the world, have adventures.

In exchange for paying for his college and his living expenses, David had been forced to major in business, but what his parents hadn’t learned until much later was that he’d also studied journalism. He’d desperately wanted to be one of those reporters that traveled to far away countries to report on wars, civil revolts, natural disasters, and anything else that would have been exciting and put him in an unfamiliar land in a dangerous situation. Rebecca had been the only one he’d shared his dreams with. The only one that supported his desire to leave Georgia and travel, just as she’d shared her dreams with him.Rebecca wanted to be a novelist.

She wanted to be like Gaiman and Tolkien. She wanted her novels to inspire the minds and creativity of people the world over. She too had big dreams of traveling the world, of making memories she could pass on to her children and grandchildren. Together they’d spent many a night lying side by side on his or her bed, dreaming about the future. They promised they’d travel together as often as possible, having adventures together and seeing where life took them. It was their dreams for their future that had kept them so closely bound during the hectic schedule of their college life.
